Symposium Theme "What the Best College Teachers Do"

The VRS Interpreting Institute (VRSII) Interpreter Educators Symposium training focuses on the idea that interpreter educators have the desire and ability to improve their teaching expertise. The goal of the four-and-a-half day training is to create deep and lasting learning of effective teaching practices that will result in increased teacher satisfaction and enhanced student achievement.


Keynote Speaker and Symposium Presenters

On March 10, the symposium’s featured speaker will be Dr. Ken Bain, author of "What the Best College Teachers Do" www.bestteachersinstitute.org/kenbain. Recognized around the world for his scholarship in teaching and research in the mechanics of learning, Dr. Bain has been invited to present workshops and lectures at more than 200 universities internationally. He also has consulted with scores of universities on programs to support the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Acclaimed American Sign Language (ASL) educators Dr. Carol J. Patrie, Ph.D. www.carolpatrie.com/bio, Dr. Marty Taylor, Ph.D. www.martytaylor.com/interpretation, and Sharon Neumann Solow will present and facilitate the symposium as well.


Training Focus

Dr. Bain’s research topics include what we know about learning, what to expect of students, how to best prepare to teach, how to treat students, how students are evaluated and how college teachers evaluate themselves. A variety of activities, including lecture, discussion, group work, reflection and experiential learning will be included in the symposium to convey content. Prior to the symposium, participants will be provided with a copy of "What the Best College Teachers Do" by Dr. Ken Bain.
